Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the five-year European Research Council (ERC) funded project Laser Control over Crystal Nucleation (CONTROL), which aims to develop a novel platform for the manipulation of phase transitions, crystal nucleation, and polymorph control based on optical tweezing and plasmonic tweezing. The work will be carried out in the Chemical Photonics group working with Prof. Klaas Wynne and additional background to the work can be found in Nature Chemistry 10, 506 (2018), doi:10.1038/s41557-018-0009-8.

New optical and microscopic techniques will be developed to allow laser manipulation on a massively parallel scale and chiral nucleation using twisted light. Systematically characterising and manipulating the phase behaviour of mixtures, will allow the use of the optical-tweezing effect to effectively control the crystallisation of small molecules, peptides, proteins, and polymers. Exploiting nanostructures will allow parallelisation on a vast scale and fine control over chirality and polymorph selection through plasmonic tweezing. Even partial success in the five years of the programme will lead to fundamental new insights and technological breakthroughs. These breakthroughs will be exploited for future commercial applications towards the end of the project.

Two positions are available now with two additional positions becoming available in the near future. Position 2 (in principle for 3 years) requires expert knowledge in plasmonics and involves microfabrication of plasmonic structures (in the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre), microscopy, plasmonic tweezing, and laser-induced nucleation. Ideally, the candidate for this position has a background in plasmonics and device fabrication or similar.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal Investigator:

1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.

2. Take a leading role in the acquisition, set up, maintenance and integration of experimental apparatus or computational kit, or in setting up theoretical models or analysis strategies.

3. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.

4. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/ School/ Research Group, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

5. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.

6. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.

7. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.

8. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (eg. Academic and Industrial Partners).

9. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

10. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

11. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.

12. Make a leading contribution to outreach and recruitment activities of The University of Glasgow.

13. Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities (e.g demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.

14. Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of Laboratory and/or Experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.

15. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.

16. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

17. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and/or PI.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:
A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)
A2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of plasmonics and/or device nanofabrication
A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism
A4 Knowledge of specialist IT software (e.g., LabView, ImageJ, Manager) as appropriate
A5 Knowledge of project-specific technical models, equipment or techniques

Skills


Essential:

Standard Terms & Conditions

 Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,210 - £39,610 per annum.

This post is full time with funding up to 3 years in the first instance.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
