Job Purpose

Applications for the post are welcome in any research areas in Device Modelling that complement the existing strengths within the School. The post-holder will develop, lead and sustain research of international standard in one or more of the following key Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering research areas: electronic, photonic, and/or nanomechanical devices, to lead research in areas synergistic and complementary to our current research areas including: the development of device simulation and modelling; development of nanofabrication processes and/or integration technologies; the development of novel devices for targeted applications; and the development of understanding of physical materials properties, deposition technologies, and their engineering for future device applications. Example materials include (but are not limited to) novel oxides, 2D materials, superconductors, and/or III-Vs.,contribute to teaching, assessment, project supervision and curriculum design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and participate in School management and organisation. 

The School is wishing to appoint a research leader in the area of Device Modelling. The successful candidate will grow a team developing systems and components in one or more of the following key Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering research areas: electronic, photonic, and/or nanomechanical devices, to lead research in areas synergistic and complementary to our current research areas including: the development of device simulation and modelling; development of nanofabrication processes and/or integration technologies; the development of novel devices for targeted applications; and the development of understanding of physical materials properties, deposition technologies, and their engineering for future device applications. Example materials include (but are not limited to) novel oxides, 2D materials, superconductors, and/or III-Vs. The successful candidate will establish collaborations with colleagues in the College in the development of new electronic, photonic, and/or magnetic components, and more widely in new system applications.  


Main Duties and Responsibilities


To carry out research and scholarship in Device Modelling, deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment, and contribute to management and administration. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management.


Perform the following range of activities:

1. Develop, lead and sustain personal and group research aligned appropriately to School/College research strategy.

2. Enhance your research profile, reputation and esteem through:
- Establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high quality refereed journals, generating research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit;
- Presentation at international and national conferences and at internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops;
- Identification of potential funding sources and the development of proposals to secure funding from internal/external bodies to support future research;
- Developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the School/College/University and external Academic and Industrial Partners;
- Contribution to team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

3. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of high quality teaching, supervision and assessment activities across under/post-graduate programmes within the Subject/School.

4. Contribute to the on-going development and design of under/post-graduate curricula, to ensure a research-led approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

5. Manage a variety of academic administrative activities, including timely delivery of effective and constructive feedback on assessment, and provision of pastoral support.

6. Contribute to the management and organisational duties of the School, as assigned by the Head of School.

7. Engage in personal, professional and career development.

8. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan - Inspiring People – Changing the World.

Knowledge/Qualifications


Essential:
A1 Relevant PhD or equivalent experience within Device Modelling research discipline
A2 Significant breadth/depth of knowledge in Device Modelling
A3 A growing international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within Device Modelling.

For appointment at Grade 9:

A4 An extensive and established reputation in research and/or teaching within Device Modelling as evidenced by esteem indicators

Experience

Essential:
E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience including postdoctoral experience, appropriate to an early career researcher
E2 Evidence of a track record of presentations and publications
E3 Experience in undertaking independent research and contributing to successful funding applications
E4 Excellent track record of development and delivery of teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level

For appointment at Grade 8:
E6 Strong track record of undertaking research, publishing in high impact journals at national and international level, and in attracting external research funding
E7 Excellent track record of contribution to academic and administration activities in a research led institution

For appointment at Grade 9:
E8 Evidence the above criteria to a higher degree, particularly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact

The James Watt School of Engineering is comprised of 5 Research Divisions including: Aerospace Sciences; Biomedical Engineering; Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering; Infrastructure and Environment; and Systems, Power and Energy. The School has 130 staff engaged in all aspects of research and teaching. The annual research income of the School is £19m, and the School is home to the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre, the National Wind Tunnel Facility, the Electronic Systems Design Centre and the Centre for Medical and Industrial Ultrasonics.

For Lecturer:
Design and lecture on equivalent of 30 credits in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes; carry normal project supervision load.
Two 3* or more REF quality papers per annum (portfolio with minimum of four 3* papers in most recent 6 year period), with the potential that one or more could meet the 4* REF criteria
Apply for external research funding on average twice per year
PGR supervision equal to Russell Group median
Consistently hold a portfolio of funding as PI sufficient to support at least one PDRA

For Senior Lecturer in addition:
Develop research capability and carry out a range of research activities and functions within academic environments of the highest national or international quality.
A sustained record of scholarly output over career to date which includes at least 4 outputs in the most recent 6 year period that meet the REF criteria for 3* or better. At least one of these outputs should also meet the REF criteria for 4*.
Research income in excess of the Russell Group median for the discipline.
PGR supervision in excess of the Russell Group median for the discipline.
Engage in personal, professional and career development to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
Leadership and collaboration in research/teaching/administration activities as appropriate.
Contribute to public engagement, outreach and recruitment, and knowledge exchange and impact activities as appropriate.
Contribute to the emergence and delivery of the School’s strategic objectives.

Standard Terms & Conditions


Salary will be on the Research & Teaching Grade, level 7 / 8 / 9, £35,845 – £40,322 / £44,045 - £51,034 / £52,560 - £59,135 per annum.

This is a full time and open ended role.

If appointed at Grade 7/8 the successful applicant of this post will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP). This will provide for you as an early career academic staff member to be developed and supported over a specified timeframe to facilitate the advancement of your academic career.
